WET COATING

Industrial wet paint coating is the traditional method for protecting and aesthetically enhancing structures and fabrications.

Radleigh carryout this process strictly in accordance within the disciplines laid down, previously in BS 5493 but now updated to, ISO 12944. ISO 12944 is the designer, specifier and paint applicator's bible for the corrosion protection of steel structures using paint systems.

Unless specifically requested Radleigh blast clean all structures and fabrications in accordance with ISO 8501 and apply paint coats to suit the atmospheric corrosivity category for the final environment location. These categories are known as C1 (interior of buildings, normally dry) through to C5-I (industrial, highly polluted) and C5-M (coastal, with high salinity). Immersion conditions are also covered for either water or soil with Im1 (fresh water), Im2 (sea or brackish water), Im3 (soil). Climatic conditions are difficult to categorize but ISO 12944 Section 2 covers this in Annex A.

We also paint hot-dipped galvanized steel which we pre-treat by either sweep blasting using a non-magnetic abrasive or by applying a mordant solution. This creates the key that is essential for good adhesion on this difficult substrate.

The development of paint types has, and is still, evolving with the introduction of High Solids and Water based Epoxies. This is to counter the ever demanding requests for the reduction in solvent based materials and for the greater durability of paint finishes. Durability is classified into three sections. Low (up to 5yrs), Medium (5 - 15yrs) and High (more than 15yrs). These time limits are a general indication of the time expected to first maintenance. Paint is bio-degradable and will, when subjected to climatic conditions, lose it's colour and thickness.

In recent years the paint manufacturers have introduced a Polysiloxane finish into the marketplace. This paint, when applied over a high solids zinc rich primer, is giving a very long life as a two or three coat system and has been adopted by the U S Coastguard amongst others.

Radleigh have the modern techniques to offer a first class service for industrial wet painting and the resources by way of the Institute of Corrosion Level 2 inspection qualifications to ensure that the customers specifications are complied with.
